Tuesday’s dousing rains across northern Missouri meant unplayable conditions for the majority of scheduled softball games Tuesday night, with three of the four scheduled contests to open the Grand River Conference’s Eastern Division slate washed out, including Trenton at Putnam County, Princeton at Maysville, and Milan at Gallatin, all moved to Wednesday night at 5:30.
The only GRC East game that went on as scheduled was in Bethany, where the South Harrison Lady Bulldogs hosted the Polo Lady Panthers. In a well-played game by both sides, a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed the eventual game-winning run to score, as the Bulldogs were able to grind out a 3-2 win.
In a battle between South Harrison’s Hannah Carter and Polo’s Hanna Vaught, scoring opportunities were hard to find, with a Carter single in the South Harrison first giving the home side a 1-0 advantage. Kenley Moore’s bat was critical in bringing Polo back to even through the middle innings, with two hits in four at-bats.
Carter’s pitching was strong for South Harrison, going the complete game seven innings, allowing just five hits with the two runs, while striking out nine. For Polo, Vaught went six innings, surrendering nine hits and three runs, with four strikeouts.
Kaliska Madison was the best hitter of the night, with a 3-for-3 effort for South Harrison.
In addition to the three previously mentioned GRC Eastern Division games, other contests pushed to Wednesday were Worth County at North Andrew, Richmond at Lawson, Stewartsville-Osborn at Polo, Higginsville at Cameron, Chillicothe at East Buchanan, and Bishop LeBlond at North Platte. North Harrison’s game at Pattonsburg, postponed from Tuesday night, was moved to Saturday, October 2nd.
The Chillicothe boys soccer team had an outstanding start to the season on Tuesday night, routing MEC rival Cameron 8-0, with Drake Cosgrove and Chace Corbin both slamming in four goals for the Hornets. Chillicothe plays at Marshall on Thursday night.
