In a matchup featuring the top two teams in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer, the Seattle Sounders handed Sporting Kansas City a rare home defeat on Sunday night, winning 2-1 at Children’s Mercy Park.
Cristian Roldan and Will Bruin gave Seattle the early advantage, with Roldan scoring in the 31st minute, and Bruin adding a tally in the 55th minute. Sporting generally controlled the pace of play, but was left frustrated at the lack of scoring, finally breaking the ice in the 60th minute on a goal by Johnny Russell.
The win improves Seattle to 14-5-6, good for 48 points, three points up on the 45 points for Kansas City, with a mark of 13-6-6.
