Shields win Cameron singles title, as Trenton opens boys tennis season

Trenton High School’s Nick Shields won four out of four matches on Wednesday, to win the singles championship in the Cameron Invitational boys tennis tournament.  Shields, in the opening round, beat Buford of Higginsville 8-love, following up that victory with an 8-love win over Johnson of Kirksville.  In the semifinals, Shields won 8 of 10 points to beat Young of Savannah (8-2), then clinched the title with an 8-4 triumph over Hoshaw of Kirksville.

In doubles play, Trenton’s team of Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton won third place, taking the “bronze” with an 8-4 win over Maasdam and Mayer of Chillicothe.  In the semifinals, the Bulldog duo had lost to Banks and Hepler of Warrensburg, 9-7.  Ockenfels and Houghton opened the tournament with a 8-3 win over Gustafson and Long of Maryville, before defeating Hendler and Fraser of Kirksville 8-4 in the second round.

Trenton’s doubles team of Gabe Swann and Wyatt Neal went 1-2, with an opening round win over Hermelink and Hayes of Maryville 9-7, followed by an 8-1 loss to Cho and Conley of Warrensburg, and an 8-5 consolation defeat to Butcher and Collier of Savannah.

Jeremy Elliott, competing in singles for THS, beat Portell of Higginsville in the opening round, 8-5, before being swept by the eventual singles runner-up, Hoshaw of Maryville, 8-love.  Elliott rebounded with an 8-2 consolation round win over Anderson of Cameron, then lost to Hoskins of Warrensburg, 8-6.
