The Putnam County Midgets, in a Friday night football rivalry game with the Milan Wildcats, came back from a second half, 13 point deficit to win at Cal Hubbard Field, 24-21, in action heard on KTTN FM 92.3.
PC, now 1-3 on the season, and 1-1 in the GRC Eastern Division, opened the scoring on a Torqe Brundage 25 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, with the two-point run by Grant Sands leaving the visitors up 8-0.
Milan responded to the deficit with their best play of the young season, scoring the next 21 points, on a 43 yard touchdown catch by Hunter Shaw, and back-to-back scoring runs (in addition to a two-point conversion) by Jamuel Pagan. The Midgets, on a 32-yard touchdown run by Brundage, late in the third quarter, cut the lead to 21-16 heading into the final quarter.
The Midgets took the lead with a fourth-quarter touchdown, and held Milan out of the end zone with just under 5 minutes remaining, on a fourth-down stop from inside of the 5 yard line, preserving the Putnam County advantage, and eventually, the road win.
While disappointed by the loss to their long-time border rival, the loss by the young Wildcats did show great improvement by Milan, benefits of a tough three-game stretch (Mark Twain. South Callaway, Princeton) to open the 2017 season. The Wildcats will turn around to play the Trenton Bulldogs in the Milan homecoming game this Friday night at Cal Hubbard Field, with coverage of the 7 o’clock game on Hot Country Z 101.7. Milan is now 0-4 on the season, and 0-2 GRC Eastern Division play. Trenton, coming off a 20-point loss to unbeaten Princeton, is 1-3 overall, and 1-1 in GRC East play.
