The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have recalled infielder Christian Colon from Omaha (AAA) and selected the contracts of outfielder Daniel Nava and right-handed pitcher Kevin McCarthy from the Storm Chasers. All three players will be in uniform (Nava – #12; McCarthy – #61) for tonight’s game against the Minnesota Twins. To make room on their Major League reserve list, outfielder Rey Fuentes and right-handed pitcher Nick Tepesch have been designated for assignment.
Colon, 27, was optioned on August 31 and has played in a career-high 47 games with the Royals this season. He’s batting .228 with five doubles and 10 RBI this season; while in 19 games at Omaha, he hit .273 with five doubles, a homer and scored nine runs.
Nava, 33, was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on August 29 after batting .235 with five doubles, a homer and 13 RBI in 45 games at the Major League level. In his two Triple-A stops, Nava hit .320 and recorded seven doubles, a homer, 13 RBI and a .397 on-base percentage.
McCarthy, 24, is on a Major League roster for the first time in his career. The Royals’ 16th-round draft pick in 2013 pitched at both Omaha and Northwest Arkansas (AA) this season, posting a combined record of 5-6 with a 3.04 ERA and holding the opposition to a .219 batting average in 47 relief appearances. He collected 16 saves in 22 opportunities, including 11-for-14 with the Naturals.
The Royals have 33 players on their Active Roster and 40 on the Reserve List.
