North Harrison High School right-hander Carly Rinehart came within two outs of a no-hitter on Monday night, shutting down the Milan Lady Wildcats offensive attack and receiving plenty of support from the Shamrocks side, as the defending HDC Conference champions rolled to a 9-0 victory in Eagleville, broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3.
North Harrison, after a bunt attempt by Jayleigh Robins resulted in a quick out in the bottom of the first inning, put five hits in a row together of Milan junior right-hander Cady Pauley, as Rinehart’s single was followed by singles by Emma Craig, Rainey Fordyce, and Camden Castleberry, with a run-scoring double by Kami Gibson giving the Lady Shamrocks a four-run cushion.
Pauley nearly worked out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the 2nd, but a wild pitch on a swinging strikeout allowed Fordyce to reach base, scoring Ruby Heintz. North Harrison added insurance with three runs in the fifth inning, and one more in the sixth.
In her varsity debut for Milan, freshman third baseman Kyla White had a solid night, playing strong defense, and drawing a pair of walks, showing a good eye and ability to foul off tough pitches in both at-bats. Pauley spoiled Rinehart’s no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh.
Rinehart earned the victory in pushing North Harrison’s season record to 3-1, striking out 11 Milan batters in the complete game effort. North Harrison, on Tuesday night, will play Platte Valley, with Milan returning home to host the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs in the Grand River Conference opener for both teams.
