One of the top multi-sport athletes from north Missouri, Penney High School senior Jaran Richman, has signed with the men’s basketball program at North Central Missouri College. At NCMC, Richman, nephew of Athletic Director Steve Richman and son of former TJC Pirate Dave Richman (1984-1986), will play for second-year head coach Jeremy Esry, himself a Penney High School graduate.
Richman, a 6’2″ guard, scored 1,381 points in his four-year career in Hamilton, adding 5.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game. Jaran has a four-time All-KCI Conference selection and named All-District all four years in high school.
On the football field, Richman was equally, if not more-so, successful, leading the Hornets to the Class 1 state title in November as quarterback of a 15-0 squad from Hamilton. At quarterback, Richman was a two-time All-State selection, while his work in the classroom earned him All-State Academic Team honors.
After gaining Richman’s signature, Coach Esry commented, “Jaran Richman is a proven leader and winner. I have known Jaran and his family since he was in elementary school. One thing has always been consistent with him, he knows how to win and what it takes to win consistently. He has always been a high IQ player who understands how to play the game the right way. He is a great leader, as shown by being an All-State quarterback and State Champion in football. We know that he is going to carry those traits over right away to our program for the next 2 years. Not only is Jaran a winner athletically but he has also shown he knows what it takes to win in the classroom. He had a great GPA and ACT score in high school. That has already received recognition in his receiving of the coveted Pirate’s Pride Top Student Scholarship as well as a Board of Trustee’s Scholarship”.
The Richman family has strong ties to the two-year Trenton school, as his uncle Steve, in addition to his current duties as Athletic Director and softball coach, was the long-time men’s basketball coach at NCMC (2000 to 2015). Jaran’s cousin Whitley will be a freshman on the NCMC Lady Pirates basketball team this fall.
