The Polo Panthers defeated the Trenton Bulldogs in Grand River Conference Eastern Division boys basketball action on Monday night by a score of 47-43, improving to 2-3 on conference play.
With high-scoring forward Joe Beaver saddled on the bench with first-half foul trouble, forward Alex Pilger picked up the slack for the Panthers, with 11 first half points and a game-high 18 point effort for Polo. Cody Blackwell had nine and Trent Raby eight for the Panthers.
Trenton trailed by double digits twice in the fourth quarter, but rallied, and had possession of the basketball down by two with seconds remaining. An eight-foot runner missed, and Polo’s Beaver hit a pair of free throws to ice the win.
Trenton (3-14, 0-5), still in search of its first GRC win, had 13 points from Royce Jackson and nine from Chase Otto.
The girls game saw Trenton pull away from Polo in the second half, expanding the lead from 25-23 at the half to 38-27, eventually emerging with a 59-40 win. The Lady Bulldogs (11-7, 4-1), had 28 points from All-GRC forward Maci Moore, with the senior tandem of McKayla Blackburn and Lexi Whitaker each scoring nine. Polo (10-9, 2-3) had 12 points from Haley Aubrey and six points each for Kendall McCracken and Alayna Chapman.
Tuesday night will be a full night of action in the GRC, with Polo hosting South Harrison, Maysville traveling to Princeton, Trenton hosting Putnam County (on KGOZ FM 101.7), and Gallatin making the trek to Milan.
