NU defensive coordinator Braun elevated to head coach

Northwestern University has promoted David Braun from defensive coordinator to interim coach for the upcoming football season, following the firing of Pat Fitzgerald in the wake of a hazing scandal. A person familiar with the decision revealed the information to The Associated Press on Thursday, speaking anonymously as Braun’s promotion had not yet been officially announced.

Braun joined Northwestern as the defensive coordinator just six months ago. Prior to that, he spent four seasons in the same role at North Dakota State, where he contributed to the team’s FCS national championships in 2019 and 2021.

Pat Fitzgerald was dismissed on Monday after a university investigation substantiated allegations of hazing involving 11 current and former players. The investigation revealed instances of “forced participation, nudity, and sexualized acts of a degrading nature,” according to a statement by Northwestern President Michael Schill.

Throughout the investigation, Fitzgerald maintained that he had no knowledge of the hazing activities. Initially, Northwestern suspended but did not fire Fitzgerald. However, an article published by The Daily Northwestern included allegations from a former player, describing specific incidents of hazing and abuse, and suggesting that Fitzgerald may have been aware of the misconduct.

With Braun assuming the role of interim coach, Northwestern’s football program will be led by someone who has not previously worked alongside Fitzgerald during a game and is not familiar with the culture established by the former coach. The rest of Fitzgerald’s assistant coaches and support staff will remain in their positions for the 2023 season, as stated by the university.
