The Novinger Wildcats tandem of Trae Brownell and Mikey Ortega combined to go 5-for-5 with five runs scored, leading NHS to a 10-1 win over Green City in the Class 1, District 12 baseball championship game on Thursday night. The win sends Novinger into the Class 1 state playoffs, and a Monday night meeting with Silex in the “Round of 16”. Nathan Chase had the only RBI of the night for Green City.
Other Class 1 district champions include the Braymer Bobcats, a 4-0 winner over North Nodaway in District 16. Jordan Miller of Braymer fired a one-hit shutout, sending the Bobcats into a sectional meeting with Bucklin/Macon County, a 9-0 winner over Linn County in the District 15 title game on Thursday night.
The Class 1, District 14 champion is Northwest High School of Hughesville, a 5-4 winner on Thursday night over the Santa Fe Chiefs.
The Class 2, District 6 title goes to the Canton Tigers, after a hard-fought 2-1 win over upset-minded Scotland County on Thursday night. West Platte is the Class 2, District 16 champion, scoring five unanswered runs, including two in the top of the 9th inning, to outlast KCI rival Mid-Buchanan 5-3.
The Lawson Cardinals are champions of Class 3, District 16, courtesy of a 4-2 win over Bishop LeBlond. The Lexington Minutemen took the Class 3, District 14 title with a 9-2 win over Higginsville, while St. Pius X won Class 4, District 15, with an 8-6 win over Smithville. The Warriors will meet up with District 16 champion Lafayette in the first round of the Class 4 state playoffs.
