Notre Dame dominating Class 1 golf through Day 1, Trenton’s Werthen Gass shoots 94

Notre Dame High School of Cape Girardeau has a dominating lead of 36 strokes over second place Pembroke Hill, while Sarah Bell of Notre Dame shot a 69, for a five-stroke lead over teammate Allison Bray and India Gaume of Pembroke Hill, after the first day of the Class 1 girls state golf championships in Columbia.

Notre Dame’s team score of 319 is easily besting the 355 of Pembroke Hill and the third-place score of 358 by John Burroughs.  Maryville, at 400, sits in 5th place in the team standings, with Macon’s score of 483 good for 8th place.

Locally, the top score of 84 was turned in by Samantha Cornelius of Penney High of Hamilton, good for a 7th place tie with Emma Chedwick of Mexico and Kayla Pfitzner of John Burroughs.

Trenton High School junior Werthen Gass has the top score among those from the Grand River Conference at state, with a first-round mark of 94 putting Gass in a tie for 31st place with Haley Taylor of Notre Dame.  

Chillicothe’s Hallie Jones and Allison Marticke of Stanberry each shot 97, putting those two in a group of five girls at 97.  Of three golfers from the GRC champion Gallatin Lady Bulldogs, the top round was 100, turned in by Kelli Lynch.  Megan Cox shot 110 and Sarabeth Michael 122 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Brookfield’s Laken Sattman had a good day, after just making the cut line at Section 3, as Sattman shot 102, in a five-way tie for 49th place.  Putnam County’s Molly Jo Parker shot a 126.

Day 2 of the Class 1 state tournament will be played, starting Tuesday morning, at Columbia Country Club.
