A Thanksgiving Weekend schedule that has included three games on the holiday and a full slate of Sunday games for several years could see an addition in 2023, as the National Football League has plans on playing a regular season game on “Black Friday”, the nickname for the shopping-heavy day after Thanksgiving.
Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand reported on the NFL’s plans, indicating that the 2023 game is not planned for a one-time event, but instead would become a regular addition to the schedule.
The game would be streamed by Amazon Prime Video, a company that already has the “Thursday Night Football” package beginning this September. That package does not include Thanksgiving Day games, which will be carried by over-the-air networks CBS, FOX, and NBC.
The “Black Friday” NFL game would need to be played in the afternoon, as the league’s antitrust exemption prohibits the televising of prime time games on Friday night.
