The Chillicothe Mudcats held off a late-game St. Joseph rally on Thursday night, winning 10-7 in MINK League action at Shaffer Park / Haney Field, pushing the ‘Cats streak to five consecutive triumphs in a row. The head-to-head victory over the Mustangs was Chillicothe’s third against their “Highway 36” rivals this summer.
The Mudcats’ pitcher, Layne Rutherford, had a solid performance, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs off four hits while striking out three. The bullpen, consisting of Josiah Golden, Justice Ramirez, and Karter Muck, also played a crucial role in securing the win.
Offensively, the Mudcats got off to an early start by scoring four runs in the first inning. They continued to add runs over the next few innings, building a 10-1 lead. Center fielder Noah Hata had a standout night, going 3-5 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Designated hitter Kodai Yaoita also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Right fielder Luca Boscarino, playing in his final game of the season, contributed with a double and three RBIs. Boscarino also made the final play of the game, securing the victory for the Mudcats with a flyout to right field.
The win was particularly significant for the Mudcats, as it ended both teams’ four-game winning streaks. The game showcased the team’s ability to come out on top in close contests, as they have been doing in recent games. The victory was celebrated with fireworks lighting up the sky behind center field, adding to the romantic atmosphere of the game.
The Mudcats will have an off day on Friday before starting a three-game road trip on Saturday, beginning with a game in Des Moines at 7:00 PM.
