The Trenton Lady Bulldogs, looking to swing an upset of the Polo Lady Panthers on Tuesday night, stayed close to the 13-1 Panthers throughout the Grand River Conference game, than pounced late for a dramatic 44-42 win at the Trenton Middle School gymnasium.
THS trailed 13-10 after one quarter and 22-17 at the half, but cut the lead down to one with a 13-9 edge in the third quarter, before taking the victory.
The deciding play came with the game tied at three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, as Trenton was able to, with the use of adept ball-handling and two time-outs, run the clock down, with possession, from 45 seconds. As Teya Cooksey flashed open for a potential game-winning three point shot, the senior guard spotted sophomore center Madi Moore open under the hoop, and fed her with the ball, with Moore connecting on the game-winning lay-up.
Freshman small forward Mirena King continues to have a tremendous first-season in the Lady Bulldog program, leading THS with 18 points, including four big baskets in the final quarter. Moore added 12, and Chandler Lynch nine points for Trenton (9-7, 4-1). The win keeps the Lady Bulldogs within one game of the two-time defending GRC champion Milan Lady Wildcats.
Polo (13-2, 3-2) was paced by 14 points from Mary Copeland, 11 from Chloe Gilbert, and 10 points from Haley Aubrey.
The boys game went to Polo, with the Panthers improving to 8-7, 1-4 with a 69-49 win at Trenton (0-14, 0-5). Trent Raby led Polo with 22 points, with Jace Bolling adding 17, and Maverick Gentry 15 points.
Trenton had 35 of its 49 points from its starting backcourt, as Kiefer Tolson scored 18 points and Gabe Novak 17.
