Missouri men’s basketball maintained its undefeated road record by defeating Pittsburgh 71-64 in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge. This marked the Tigers’ first victory over an ACC opponent since beating NC State in December 2013, ending their longest win drought against a Power Five conference.
Mizzou (6-2) showcased consistency throughout the entire 40-minute game, addressing a previous criticism. Coach Dennis Gates credited the effective starting lineup proposed by Sean East II, contributing to a complete game.
Tamar Bates, in his first start since joining Mizzou, scored 12 points, shooting 66.7% from beyond the arc. Aidan Shaw, also awarded his first start of the season, added four points and a blocked shot.
East defended the starting five, emphasizing their consistent energy in practice, crucial for the game against Pittsburgh (5-2). The Panthers stayed close in the first half due to eight fouls by Missouri, allowing them to shoot 92.3% from the free-throw line.
East recorded his fourth 20-point performance, but accumulated four fouls and five turnovers in the second half. Noah Carter stood out as the more efficient veteran, leading with a plus/minus rating of plus-18.
Missouri’s strong defensive approach held Pitt without a field goal for almost nine minutes in the second half, building leads as large as 10 points. Despite a late push by Pittsburgh, Missouri secured the victory.
Connor Vanover, after uncertain standing within the team, received significant playing time and posted an efficiency rating of 12. Missouri’s upcoming schedule includes a home game against high-major Wichita State, followed by a three-game trip facing No. 5 Kansas, Seton Hall, and No. 24 Illinois.
