During the 2013 recruitment of Blue Springs High School defensive back Kaleb Prewett, the Missouri Tigers were involved, but got “into the game” late, and early interest from the Kansas State Wildcats led Prewett to Manhattan, and gave MU a rare head-to-head recruiting loss against K-State for an “in-state” player.
Prewett played in six games as a freshman at KSU in 2014, and was the starting free safety for the Wildcats in 2015, finishing sixth on the team in tackles with 49, including a superb 12-tackle effort against Texas Tech. However, as the season and then off-season progressed, Prewett began to think about a return to his home state, and the SEC’s Tigers.
That thought process led to the confirmation, on Thursday, that Prewett is transferring to Mizzou this summer. A three-star prospect coming out of Blue Springs High School, Prewett will have to sit out the 2016 season for the Tigers, as part of NCAA transfer rules, before becoming eligible to play in 2017. Prewett had made mention, via his Twitter profile, of saying he is “a Mizzou safety”, but the transfer itself was confirmed on Thursday by Blue Springs High School football coach Kelly Donohoe.
Prewett originally committed to Kansas State in July 2013, but grew very fond of Mizzou lead recruiter Andy Hill as the Tigers made a late push, a relationship thought to be a major factor in Prewett now going to MU, despite an almost entirely new coaching staff than the one in place with Gary Pinkel three years ago.
