Six-foot, ten-inch forward Jontay Porter has verbally announced his commitment to the University of Missouri, with the five-star prospect becoming the latest addition the the Tiger program for Head Coach Cuonzo Martin.
Porter, the younger brother of Michael Porter Jr., just finished his junior season, winning a Washington Class 5 state championship with Nathan Hale High School in Seattle. Jontay has the option of graduating early, and re-classifying to the Class of 2017 in order to join MU this fall, presumably to play with his older brother, who likely will declare for the NBA Draft after his freshman season. In an interview with USA Today earlier this month, Porter said he was “50-50” on the decision of whether or not to reclassify.
Jontay Porter’s commitment will fill the scholarship for the Mizzou program opened one week ago by Jakoby Kemp’s transfer announcement. On that same day, the Tigers received the signed commitment of 6’10” center Jeremiah Tilmon of East St. Louis, Illinois.
Choosing Missouri will not come as a big surprise for those following Jontay Porter’s recruitment. Wisconsin had made a late push in the recruiting battle, but was seen as a “long shot” to get Porter’s signature.
On Monday, Rivals.com rated Porter as the #10 overall prospect in the 2018 class. The website gave the younger Porter a five-star rating earlier this spring.
