The Milan girls basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 58-45 victory over the Atlanta Lady Hornets on Monday night, in quarterfinal round action from the Novinger Invitational Tournament.
Starting center Angelle Ziegler had a strong night inside the paint for Milan, finishing with 22 points. Evelyn Castro added 10 points while Kenna Michael added seven. For Atlanta, Danielle Welch had 12 points with Molly Waddle scoring nine.
The win advances Milan into a Wednesday night semifinal with the #1 seed, former conference rival Scotland County. The Lady Tigers cruised past Newtown-Harris in the quarterfinal round 77-4. The Scotland County / Milan game will tip off at 6:40. Newtown-Harris will battle Atlanta in the consolation semifinal, Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock.
The Milan boys, like the Lady ‘Cats, were attempting to move to 2-0 on the season, but came up short in a 78-69 loss to in-county rival Green City. Devin Fields scored 29 points and Hunter Chase 27 for the Gophers, with Marshall Lunsford scoring 12. For the Wildcats, Wyatt Bohle had 19 points, Ryley Head 10, and Ryan Dabney nine.
The Gophers advance to play #1 seed LaPlata in a 5:20 boys semifinal on Wednesday. Milan will play Atlanta in Wednesday night’s final game, scheduled for an 8 o’clock tip at Novinger High School. LaPlata rolled past Atlanta in Monday night’s boys quarterfinal round, 66-27.
The second night of quarterfinal action will be Tuesday at Novinger, with the #3 seeded LaPlata girls taking on the host Novinger Lady Wildcats at 4 o’clock, followed by the #2 boys seed, Scotland County, taking on Newtown-Harris at 5:20. At 6:40, the #2 seed Green City Lady Gophers battle Brashear, with the #3 seed Novinger boys drawing a match-up with Brashear at 8 o’clock.
