Milan boys go 2-1 at Novinger Tournament, take consolation honors

A disappointing quarterfinal loss to rival Green City in Monday night’s quarterfinal round only slowed the Milan Wildcats early season momentum slightly, as Andrea Dabney’s boys basketball team rebounded in fine fashion over its final two games at the Novinger Tournament, taking the consolation title on Friday night with a 76-31 blowout of Brashear, broadcast locally on KTTN FM 92.3.

Milan showed tremendous roster depth in the win, with 13 players scoring the basketball.  Ryan Dabney led the Wildcats with 14 points while Wyatt Bohle added 13.  Colt Acton paced Brashear with 19 of the Tigers 31 points.

In the girls third place game, also broadcast on KTTN, the Lady ‘Cats of Milan High School dueled with LaPlata, and had a rough offensive night cost them in a 43-30 loss to the Lady Bulldogs.  Senior guard Kenna Michael paced the Lady ‘Cats with 12 points, while Summer Wood had 16 for LaPlata.

The Milan girls are now 2-2 on the season, while the Milan boys surge to 3-1.  The Wildcats, Tuesday night on Hot Country Z 101.7, will host the Scotland County Tigers in action to be heard on Hot Country Z 101.7.  The girls game at 6 o’clock will be followed by the boys game at 7:30 between the former Tri-Rivers Conference rivals.

Novinger’s girls won the consolation final on Friday night, 41-34 over Atlanta, while the Scotland County Tigers claimed the Novinger Tournament titles with Saturday afternoon victories over the Green City girls and LaPlata boys.  The girls final was 71-43 while the Tiger boys upset #1 seed LaPlata 68-52.

Other high school basketball finals from northeast Missouri on Friday night were the Clark County girls over Putnam County 80-24, the North Harrison girls winning at Grundy County 44-33, the Clark County boys edging Putnam County 87-71, North Harrison boys 51-29 winners at Grundy County, South Shelby’s boys over North Shelby 59-43, the Marceline boys taking third place in the Glasgow Tournament, 48-43 over New Franklin, and the Marceline girls beating Fayette 40-26 to win fifth place at the Glasgow Tournament.

Mackenzie Fessler, Levi Terrell, and Trey Davis all scored 15 points for the Tigers boys, while Elaine Ewigman led the Lady Tigers with 11 points.

The Marceline girls (3-1) and boys (2-2) will host the Trenton Bulldogs on Tuesday night on KGOZ-TV (YouTube.com/KTTNRadio), with action starting with the girls varsity game at 6 o’clock.

The Linn County girls lost to Northwestern in the third place game of the Northwestern Tournament 57-41.  The Meadville girls claimed a 45-14 win over Bucklin-Macon County to win consolation, while the Keytesville boys won consolation, 51-37 over Brunswick.
