Trenton High School was one of eight schools participating in Wednesday’s Cameron Tennis Tournament, with two singles entries and two doubles entries. The highest success achieved by the Lady Bulldogs was a fourth place finish, good for medals, for the doubles team of Samantha Mihalovich and Maddie Searcy. Sam and Maddie started their day with a win over Platte County 6-2, following that up with a 6-love rout of Higginsville. Against a team from Lafayette, the Irish kept the Trenton duo out of the title match, winning 6-3. Mihalovich and Searcy lost the third place match to Maryville, 8-3.
Emma Gilham and Alainey Fair did not go home empty handed for Trenton, winning their first match of the day, 6-1 over Cameron, earning a quarterfinal match against Maryville. The Spoofhounds won that duel 6-love, and Gilham and Fair were bounced from the 16-team field with a 6-2 loss to Warrensburg.
In singles play, Lauren Dolan played very strong tennis for Trenton. Playing what Bobbie Hainey referred to as “the best tennis of her high school years”, Dolan opened with a difficult loss to Higginsville 6-2. Lauren rebounded with a dominant 6-love win over Cameron, followed by, in one of the most competitive matches of the day, a 7-5 squeaker against Maryville. In the consolation final, Dolan lost to Warrensburg in another tight match, 6-4.
Claire Utley moved into the singles quarterfinals with an opening round singles win against Savannah 6-2. Utley lost her next two matches, 6-2 against Platte County and 6-4 opposite Cameron.
Trenton will host Benton on Tuesday and Chillicothe on Thursday, in head-to-head duels next week. Both matches start at 4 o’clock.
