For the first time since joining the Grand River Conference four years ago, the Trenton Lady Bulldog softball team will not win the conference title in 2019. A season-opening loss at Putnam County by a score of 4-1 put Trenton behind the eight ball in the standings, and despite THS “winning out” in divisional play since, the Lady Midgets have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, with the GRC East title clinched on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win at Maysville.
The game went into the 7th inning tied, with Putnam County scoring twice to grab the lead and hang on for the win, as Sammi Bradshaw fired shutout softball at MHS. On Thursday, October 3rd, the Lady Midgets will host the GRC Western Division champion Worth County Lady Tigers, an 8-1 winner over King City on Tuesday night, improving Worth County to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in division play.
Trenton had gone into the day on Tuesday hoping for a win at Milan and a Wolverine win over Putnam County that could have, potentially, put the GRC East title into a complicated three-way tiebreak scenario. Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, not only did the Midgets win spoil those hopes, but a Tuesday morning water issue in Milan forced postponement of the Trenton at Milan GRC game. It will be made up on Thursday afternoon (September 26th) at 4:30.
In other GRC action, the Princeton Lady Tigers rolled to a 13-1, five inning win at Polo, improving to 8-3 on the season. Freshman Makenzie Duncan hit her second homer of the season for PHS, which appears destined for the #4 seed in next week’s “crossover” games. Lauren Krohn got the Princeton offense going with a first inning RBI double, followed by a run-scoring hit by Jasmine Allen. The Lady Tigers put the contest away in the second, adding five more runs. Lindsey Batson, as part of a 3 for 3 night, had an RBI hit, as did Lacie Lewis and Duncan.
Krohn got the win for Princeton, going five innings, allowing two hits and one run.
In the other GRC East matchup from Tuesday night, South Harrison downed Gallatin 3-1. In the MEC, Chillicothe went nine innings to beat Maryville 5-3.
Marceline was an 18-5 winner over Westran, while in the CLAA Tournament semifinals, Brunswick hammered Hale 16-0, with Norborne skipping by Hardin-Central 10-9.
