University of Missouri senior guard Sierra Michaelis, a 2013 graduate of North Mercer High School, has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Player of the Week, coming off a two game stretch that saw averages of 19 points, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds per game in wins over SIU-Edwardsville and Wichita State.
Against Edwardsville, Michaelis hit a career-high six three-pointers in a season-high 24 point outing, helping MU absorb the loss of sophomore leading scorer Sophie Cunningham, who sat out with a back injury. On Friday night against WSU, again with Cunningham sidelined, Michaelis racked up an NCAA-season record tying nine steals in a 64-57 Tiger win. The nine steals represent the most by an SEC player in a single game this season, and represented the most steals by a Tiger player since Tracy Franklin in 2001.
Michaelis shared Tuesday’s award with Texas A&M’s Anriel Howard. The award is the first career SEC weekly honor won by Michaelis, and the first for any Mizzou player this season.
The Mizzou women host Tennessee-Martin at 11 AM Saturday at Mizzou Arena. The non-conference slate will then be wrapped up with a home matchup against UC-Riverside and a trip to St. Louis to meet the SLU Billikens.
