The Mercer girls continued to fine-tune their game for a potential playoff run, steamrolling through three opponents to win the Meadville Tournament, while the Mercer boys settled for third place at Meadville, beating Linn County on Friday night, 24 hours after falling to eventual tourney champion Northwestern 85-75 in the semifinal round.
Now, focus in Mercer, for so many focused on a strong girls basketball program, will go to a boy’s game that could decide the HDC Conference’s regular season champion. On Tuesday night, the Cardinals host the Winston Redbirds, with the 7:30 contest bringing together the #1 ranked, unbeaten ‘Birds against Jeff Wyatt’s three-times beaten 10th-ranked Cardinals.

The Mercer teams travel to North Harrison on Friday night, with the focus again shifting to the Lady Cardinals, who will play the team widely-seen as the biggest threat to the Cardinals seven-year reign atop the HDC. On Saturday, the Mercer girls play Newtown-Harris at 3 o’clock, preceded by the #2 seeded Mercer boys playing Gilman City at 1:30, in the quarterfinals of the HDC Conference Tournament at Winston High School.
