Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced on Wednesday that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not play in the team’s final regular-season game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. With the AFC West title already secured, Reid has opted to rest several starters, and Mahomes will be joined by others on the sidelines.
Mahomes concludes the regular season with impressive stats, amassing 4,183 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 16 games played. The eighth-year quarterback out of Texas Tech maintained a completion rate of 67.2%.
In Mahomes’ absence, veteran quarterback Blaine Gabbert will step in as the starter. This marks Gabbert’s first start since 2018 when he played for the Tennessee Titans. During the current season, Gabbert has seen limited action, appearing in just one game for the Chiefs, where he threw two interceptions in five attempts against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 24.
With both teams having different stakes in the game, the Chiefs (10–6) and the Chargers (5–11) are scheduled to face off on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET at SoFi Stadium. The matchup will be broadcast on CBS.
