The North Central Missouri College women saw an advantage inside the paint against Southwestern (Iowa) on Tuesday night, and went to freshman center Sarah Lamp early and often, as the former Kirksville Lady Tiger scored a season-high 33 points, in an 82-71 win at the Ketcham Community Center, broadcast on KGOZ-TV.
Lamp was superb from the free throw line, hitting all 13 shots from the stripe. Kendey Eaton (Mound City, MO), slowed by foul trouble in the first half, finished the game with a scoring flourish, with 15 of her 20 points in the final two quarters. Sophomore McKinley Hurley (Trenton, MO), despite fouling out in the final quarter, ended with 11.
The Lady Pirates, now 4-2 on the season, continue to show vast improvement from last year’s eight-win team. Sports Director Tom Johnson spoke about the difference from 2015 to 2016 with Polo native and Lady Pirate sophomore Adriana Segar:
North Central’s road to a 4-2 did hit a road bump on the first weekend of November, with two losses in two days to Johnson County and Fort Scott. However, the Lady Pirates did play well in spurts against strong competition, just days after opening the season with a home-court win over defending national champion Kansas City Kansas:
In the Tuesday night loss, Southwestern (1-4) was paced by 21 points from sophomore guard Julanie Carter. Failyn Beemer added 19 points (12 from three-point field goals).
This weekend, the Lady Pirates travel to Quincy, Illinois to play in the John Wood Community College Classic. NCMC will take on John Wood on Friday night at 7:30 before coming back the next day to play Bryant & Stratton Community College at 1 o’clock. The next home game for Jenni Croy’s team will be Monday night (November 21st) against the William Penn JV at 5:30.
