The Chillicothe Lady Hornets outlasted the visiting Trenton Lady Bulldogs in a Labor Day tennis battle, winning 7 of 9 varsity matches to grab the victory. The five match victory for Chillicothe is somewhat deceiving, as every match was very competitive, including one singles and one doubles match that went to a tiebreak, and a single match that finished 8-6 in favor of CHS.
For Trenton, #3 singles entry Mallory Sole picked up her first win of the season, an 8-5 triumph over Megan Sisson. The doubles win for the Lady Bulldogs was from the #1 squad of Lexi Gott, an 8-3 win over Delaney May and Megan Sisson, matching the most lopsided result of the match. The other 8-3 final was at #2 doubles, with Cami Carpenter and Leah Lourenco of the Lady Hornets downing Trenton’s Sole and Alaina Overton 8-3. In the #3 doubles match, Chillicothe’s Rylee Washburn and Olivia Anderson were able to grind out a 9-8 win over Emilee Lovell and Harley Hall of Trenton, with the tiebreak going 7-4.
At #4 singles, the Lady Hornets’ Lourenco beat Trenton’s Overton 9-8, with that tiebreaker going 7-3. Other Chillicothe singles triumphs came from Delaney May (8-6 over Lexi Gott), Cami Carpenter (8-5 over Morgan Dolan), Rylee Washburn (8-5 over Emilee Lovell), and Audry Snider (8-5 over Harley Hall).
Trenton coach Tammy Ockenfels said, “Mallory Sole played great tonight and got her first singles win of the season along with our #1 doubles team Lexi Gott and Morgan Dolan! We need to work on our mental game and how to push through and finish our matches strong!”
The teams played three junior varsity matches, with Trenton winning two to Chillicothe’s one. Lydia Leininger and Jessika Kennedy of Trenton beat Isabella Garr and Hailey Fahling of Chillicothe 6-3, with Chloie Hall and Faith Lee of Trenton downing Emma Crower and Mallory Grable of Chillicothe 6-4. In the third match of the night, Mallory Grable and Bryton BeVelle of the Hornets beat Lindsay Babcock and Chloie Hall of the Bulldogs 7-6.
The Chillicothe tennis team will host MEC rival St. Joseph Lafayette this (Tuesday) afternoon at 4 o’clock, with Trenton continuing its tennis season at Bishop LeBlond today at 4 o’clock.
