The Green City girls continued their late-season surge, beating Tri-County Conference rival Linn County, 53-22 in the Class 1, District 11 championship game on Friday night.
Playing on their home floor, the Lady Gophers held Linn County scoreless until the second quarter, and led 23-6 at the half in the dominant performance. Brooke Littrell led Green City with 17 points, with Kelsey Howard adding nine and Katelyn Conner six.
The wins sends the Lady Gophers into the state playoffs, and a Tuesday night (7:45) game against the #4 ranked Norborne Lady Pirates, a team that narrowly avoided an upset bid on Saturday from the Hale Lady Cardinals, wining the District 12 championship, 45-44.
Tuesday night’s game will be part of a doubleheader at Chillicothe High School.
In the 6 o’clock boys game on Tuesday night, the Linn County Mustangs take on the Meadville Eagles, as long-time border rivals renew acquintance, this time in the “Sweet 16”. Linn County won the District 11 title on Friday night, beating the #1 seed Novinger Wildcats, 55-50. The Mustangs scored the final six points of the game against a foul-ravaged Wildcat roster to get the playoff-clinching win.
Meadville improved to 24-4 on the season with a 57-52 victory over the Northwestern Eagles, in the Class 1, District 12 final played on Saturday afternoon at Norborne High School.
Tuesday night’s winners from Chillicothe High School move to the Class 1 state quarterfinals, Saturday night at Salisbury High School.
