The top-seeded Milan Lady Wildcats improved to 7-1 on the season, beating Novinger 66-23 in the quarterfinal round of the 61st annual Milan Invitational Tournament on Monday night. Junior Cady Pauley had a game-high 31 points for Milan, with senior Jordan Gray adding 18. The win sends Milan into the semifinal round, and an 8 o’clock date with Marceline on Wednesday night, part of doubleheader coverage on KTTN FM 92.3. Marceline, in a 5 against 4 seed upset, took down the Putnam County Lady Midgets 51-38.
The Green City Lady Gophers advanced into a Thursday afternoon (4:30 PM) semifinal with a 43-19 win over the #7 seed Grundy R-V Lady Panthers.
Linn County’s girls, due to COVID-19 protocols and contact tracing, will not play on Tuesday afternoon in the Milan Tournament. Instead, the Milan JV girls battle Brashear in a 4:30 quarterfinal. The boys tournament gets underway Tuesday night with the Marceline Tigers playing Putnam County at 6:15, while the Milan Wildcats host Brashear at 8 o’clock. On Wednesday night, on KTTN FM 92.3, the #5 seeded Grundy R-V Panthers will take on Novinger at 6:15, with the top seeded Green City Gophers playing at 4:30.
Both the Mercer and Princeton girls won in first round action on Monday night at the South Harrison Invitational Tournament. The top-seeded Lady Cardinals throttled East Harrison 71-15, while the Lady Tigers got more of a test from #7 seed Northeast Nodaway, before emerging with a 36-21 victory. In the two other girls quarterfinals, South Harrison defeated Tri-County 51-37, while the Maysville Lady Wolverines claimed a 33-24 victory over North Harrison.
In the Tuesday night boys quarterfinals, the Princeton Tigers battle the South Harrison JV at 4:30. The Mercer boys players and coaching staff are under quarantine until Friday, the result of COVID-19 and contact tracing involving a close contact. The #3 seed Northeast Nodaway Blue Jays battle Tri-County at 6 o’clock, followed by the host South Harrison Bulldogs welcoming East Harrison to the Bethany gym. The 9 o’clock game will feature North Harrison against Maysville.
It was a rough night at the office for the Trenton basketball teams in the opening round of the Lawson Tournament. The Bulldog boys, playing KCI traditional power West Platte, finished on the short end of an 83-25 final score, dropping THS into a 5:30 consolation semifinal against North Platte on Wednesday night. However, that game could be in jeopardy, as COVID-19 cancelled North Platte’s quarterfinal with Richmond on Monday night. In boy’s quarterfinal action on Tuesday night, Chillicothe plays Hamilton at 7:30 (Barker Center), while Gallatin and Lawson playing in the LHS gymnasium at 7 o’clock.
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs fell to North Platte by a final score of 35-23, dropping THS into a 5 o’clock consolation semifinal on Wednesday night in the LHS gymnasium. The Penney Lady Hornets opened the tournament with a 37-32 Monday night quarterfinal win over West Platte. The top-seeded Chillicothe Lady Hornets will play Richmond at 5:30 on Tuesday night at the Barker Center, with the Lawson Lady Cards hosting Gallatin at 5 in the high school gym.
