University of Missouri redshirt freshman Johnathan Johnson, coming off a five catch, 115 yard performance in Saturday night’s 61-21 victory over Eastern Michigan, was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday morning.
Johnson, out of Memphis, Tennessee, had a breakout game for the Tigers, after more than a year of showing his abilities on the practice field for MU. Last season, as a true freshman, Johnson impressed during fall camp, but an injury suffered just before the regular season moved him to redshirt status for the 2015 season.
Last week at West Virginia, Alabama transfer Chris Black made a noticeable impact at wide receiver in a 27-11 loss to the Mountaineers. With the emergence of both Johnson and St. Louis native Raymond Wingo (three catches, 125 yards), Mizzou is hopeful that increased production means a greater chance of an upset against Georgia.
The Tigers host UGA on Saturday night at 6:30 in the SEC opener for both Eastern Division rivals.
