The Chillicothe Hornets and Trenton Bulldogs dueled in their annual varsity basketball doubleheader on Friday night, with the visitors from CHS emerging with a pair of convincing wins over their long-time rivals to the north.
The girls game was controlled by the combination of Chillicothe depth, defense, and shooting prowess, as a trio of three-pointers and 15 points, all in the first half, from senior guard Jordan Hibner sent the Lady Hornets to a 36-14 halftime lead, with Chillicothe cruising to a 58-29 win, pushing the Lady Hornets to 3-2 and dropping Trenton to 3-3.
Lucy Reeter came off the Chillicothe bench to drop in three three-point shots and a game-high 16 points for the Lady Hornets, with Essie Hicks adding nine points.
Trenton had 13 points from an often double-and-triple teamed Maci Moore, with Lexi Whitaker scoring six points.
The boys game went Chillicothe’s way quickly, with the Hornets blitzing the Bulldogs to a 23-2 lead after one quarter. However, an 18-3 Trenton edge in the second quarter, against many of the Hornet reserves, brought the Bulldogs back into the contest. Chillicothe’s starters regained a firm grasp of the game by the third quarter, with Chillicothe winning 68-34.
The Hornets, in improving to 2-2, had Westley Brandsgaard with 21 points, C.J. Pfaff 15, and Bradley Riley 14. Trenton, now 1-5, had nine points from Jaren Whitney and eight from Royce Jackson.
