Putnam County High School’s Calvin Heidenwith and Gallatin High School’s Jett Simmons opened Grand River Conference play with their teammates on Tuesday night, as the Midgets first-ever GRC boys basketball game was played at Gallatin, with Putnam County claiming a 74-64 road win.
In the 10 point victory for Putnam, Heidenwith was dominant, scoring 40 points, including six three-point field goals. Carson Quint contributed 15 points to the winning cause. For Gallatin, Simmons scored well over 50 percent of the Bulldog points, with a 43 point outing bolstered by seven made shots from 3-point territory. Chad Walker’s eight points were the second highest total of the night for GHS.
The second quarter provided the key stretch for the Unionville boys, as the Midgets, trailing 20-19 after one quarter, outscored the Bulldogs 21-10 in the second stanza, providing much of the final margin of victory.
The Gallatin girls opened GRC play with a 49-33 win over visiting Putnam County, as Sami Boyd scored 14 points and Hayley Michael 12 for the Lady Bulldogs. Cora Stout had eight points for the winning side. For the Lady Midgets, Jade Varner had nine points and Jordan Hollon six, including the only made three-pointer of the night for PC.
On Friday night, in GRC East games #2, Gallatin’s girls and boys will host the Princeton Tigers, while Putnam County returns to Unionville to host the Polo Panthers.
