The HDC Conference and CLAA Conference Basketball Tournaments continued after a 24-hour delay on Thursday night, with the semifinals played in Mercer at the HDC event, while consolation semifinals were contested at Tina-Avalon, leading to Friday night’s semifinal round.
From the Mercer School, the #1 seeded Grundy R-V Lady Panthers defeated North Harrison in a low-scoring contest, 46-24, riding Jandie Peterson’s 18 points and Aubrey Gann’s 13 to Saturday night’s championship game. Opposite the Lady Panthers will be the #3 seed Tri-County, as the Lady Mustangs scraped by the host Mercer Lady Cardinals 56-48.
In the boys semifinals, the top two seeds claimed victories, setting up a Winston vs. Mercer Saturday night showdown for the HDC Tournament title. The top-seeded Redbirds cruised to a victory over Grundy R-V 64-25, while the Mercer boys downed North Harrison, 60-49.
On Friday night, the two consolation semifinals will be played, with the Winston girls against East Harrison at 5 o’clock and the Gilman City boys battling East Harrison at 6:15. The mid-week postponement of games means that due to time constraints and schedule difficulties, the consolation finals will be cancelled and not made-up in the 2020 HDC Tournament.
Saturday’s schedule at Mercer starts at 3 o’clock, with the Mercer girls battling North Harrison the third place game, followed by the boys third place game between Grundy R-V and North Harrison at 4:30. The title games will follow, with Grundy R-V and Tri-County girls at 6 o’clock and the Winston and Mercer boys taking the floor at 7:30.
From the CLAA Tournament, the consolation semifinals, played on Thursday night, proved to be competitive, with the Southwest Livingston girls clipping Hale 56-53, while the Northwestern girls slipped by Breckenridge 45-44. The Brunswick boys downed Norborne 51-35 with the Tina-Avalon Dragons taking down Hardin-Central 59-34.
In Friday night’s semifinals, the Norborne girls take on upset-minded Brunswick at 4:30, followed by the Keytesville boys opposite Northwestern at 5:45. At 7 o’clock, it’s a duel between the girls teams from Hardin-Central and Tina-Avalon, with the boys 2 and 3 seeds from Hale and Southwest Livingston playing at 8:15.
