The Grundy R-5 Lady Panthers, playing on the field at Newtown-Harris on Friday night, fell behind early against visiting Green City, with the Lady Gophers claiming a quick 5-0 lead in the non-conference softball matchup.
However, there would be no quit with the Panthers on this night, as nine runs over the first two innings put the home team in control in a 17-8 win that moves Grundy R-5 to 1-5 on the season.
After Green City cut the lead to 9-8 with a three spot in the top of the third, Zoe Littleton slammed the door on the Gophers with four innings of shutout relief, striking out five batters. With the bat, Littleton supplied the fuel for the Panthers offense, with three RBI’s and a triple. Makenzy Brown had three RBI’s, with Emma Baxter adding five steals. Morgan Axtell and Aubrey Gann each had an RBI and four steals for the lightning quick Grundy side.
The win is the first in head-to-head action for Grundy R-5 over Green City in the last four years. The Lady Panthers head west on Highway 6 on Tuesday night, playing an HDC Conference game at Winston.
