The Panthers of Grundy R-V High School traveled to Linn County on Friday night, opening the fall softball and baseball seasons with duels against the Mustangs.
Grundy R-V got off to a decent start in the softball contest, leading 5-4 heading into the middle innings, but the wheels came off of the Lady Panthers wagon late, with Linn County scoring the final 11 runs in a 15-5 triumph.
The baseball contest was dominated by the Panthers, in rolling to a 17-2 victory. Linn County stayed close early, with the game tied at 2 through three innings, before a Zach Cross two-RBI hit giving Grundy a lead they would never give back.
Gage Seals opened the scoring for the Mustangs in the bottom of the first inning, with the Panthers, on the power of a two-run third inning, rallying for a tie. After Cross’ fourth-inning hit, Hunter Miller had an RBI single. A six-run outburst in the fifth inning put Linn County’s upset hopes on ice.
