The Grundy R-5 softball team, playing on their home field, triumphed over the Linn County Lady Mustangs on Wednesday night, 6-5, in a Class 1, District 12 first-round softball contest.
The game was back-and-forth, with neither team able to gain much separation from the other. Linn County scored single runs in five innings, while the difference in the contest for the Grundy team was a two-spot in the top of the fourth inning, to go with four innings with one run scored. Both teams scored one run in the decisive seventh.
Emma Baxter led the Lady Panthers offense with a 2 for 4 game, to go with two doubles, two RBI’s, a stolen bases, and two runs scored. Emma Novak was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles, two RBI’s, a steal, and a run scored. Matana Munday earned the win with seven innings of work. She struck out 11 batters, hit a batter, and walked four. With the bat, Munday was 3 for 4 with two singles, a double, and an RBI.
Coach Parsons told KTTN, “We played our best game all year! I was happy for the girls to get a district win!”
In the second game played on Wednesday night at the Galt Ball Field, Meadville defeated Tri-County 17-2.
The forecast of wet weather will be moving the district semifinals to Friday night, as #1 seed Gallatin will take on Grundy R-5 at 5:00, followed by Green City playing Meadville in an all-Tri County Conference meeting at 6:30, both scheduled for Friday night.
The Class 1, District 12 championship game will likely be moved to Saturday, although an official announcement on that has not yet been made by Grundy R-5 officials.
