COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) Frankie Wurtz hit three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points to help Green Bay beat No. 16 Missouri 56-49 on Friday night.
It was the highest ranked opponent Green Bay has ever beaten on the road. The Phoenix, who lost to No. 15 DePaul in Chicago last Friday, beat No. 24 Arizona State and No. 23 Marquette last season.
Amber Smith’s layup gave Missouri (2-1) a one-point lead at the break and Sophie Cunningham made two free throws to give the Tigers their biggest lead at 30-22 with six minutes left in the third quarter. Lyndsey Robson’s 3-point play sparked a 12-2 run that gave Green Bay a three-point lead when Madison Wolf jumper opened the fourth-quarter scoring and the Phoenix led the rest of the way. Wurtz and Missouri’s Lauren Aldridge traded 3s before Wurtz was fouled as she made another 3-pointer and completed the 4-point play to make it 49-42 with three minutes to go.
Green Bay made 7-of-8 free throws, including 4-of-4 by Wurtz, from there to seal it.
Smith, the only Missouri player to score in double figures, finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers made 15 of 50 from the field, including 6 of 23 (26 percent) from 3-point range, and 13 of 22 from the free-throw line.
