The Gilman City boys beat East Harrison on Tuesday night, 54-51, advancing to the semifinal round of the Gilman City Invitational Tournament. The Hawks held a 9 point lead (40-31) going into the fourth quarter, and had to withstand a 20 point Bobcat final quarter to earn the victory. Gage Sperry helped seal the win with two “big free throws” late in the contest.
Junior Mitchell Sievering (19 points) and sophomore Kaleb Bjornlie (18 points) led the way for Gilman City, pushing the Hawks into a Thursday night (5:45) semifinal with Pattonsburg. East Harrison drops into a consolation semifinal with Tri-County at 8:15 tonight (Wednesday night).
In other Tuesday night action from the Gilman gym, the Princeton Tigers cruised to the semifinal round, as the #2 seeds grabbed a pair of victories. The Lady Tigers moved their winning streak to four in a row with a 62-19 victory over Tri-County. Payton Goodin led Princeton with 18 points, while Jaelyn Thomas had 14, and Lindsey Batson 10 points. The Lady Tigers, in the first semifinal of the Thursday session (4:30 PM) will take on #3 seeded Pattonsburg.
The Princeton boys hammered an over-matched Union Star squad, 87-33. The win moves Damon Collins team into the Thursday semifinals, and an 8:15 tip with the Northeast Nodaway Blue Jays.
In Tuesday night’s other quarterfinal from Gilman City, the top-seeded North Harrison Lady Shamrocks controlled their game from “tip to horn”, beating Union Star 52-6.
