The Gallatin Bulldogs forced five turnovers and lit up the scoreboard at C.F. Russell Stadium for 40 first half points, turning an anticipated close game into a lopsided affair, beating the Trenton Bulldogs 46-6 in action heard on KTTN FM 92.3 and KGOZ FM 101.7.
After Gallatin avoided an early turnover by recovering a fumble caused by a sack from Trenton’s Gabe Stark, the visitors went to the air on 3rd down, with the combination of junior quarterback Peyton Baker and senior wide receiver Isaac Bird connecting for the first of two first quarter scoring strikes. Tom Johnson had the play-by-play call:
An 18 yard touchdown pass from Baker to Bird with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter gave Gallatin a 14-0 lead. A dominant second quarter for Gallatin opened on the first play from scrimmage, as Draven Wright went long-distance with his legs:
Trenton had a chance to dent the scoreboard early in the second quarter, recovering a fumble at the 48 yard line, and driving the football to the Gallatin 11. However, a fumble while utilizing the run-pass-option gave the football back to GHS. Gallatin kept its foot on the accelerator for the remainder of the half, on a 13 yard scoring run by Peyton Feiden, followed by the back-breaker, a 95 yard jaunt through the middle of the field, extending the lead to 33-0.
A 3 yard keeper by Baker with 14 seconds remaining in the half left Gallatin up by a stunning 40-0 margin heading into the break. With running clock in the second half, the two rivals split touchdown runs in the third quarter, with a 7 yard run by Draven Wright answered by a 70 yard run by Trenton’s Gabe Novak.
The win clinches a share of a second consecutive Grand River Conference championship for Gallatin, now 8-0 on the season, and 6-0 in the GRC, while Trenton, having lost to Gallatin for the 7th consecutive season, falling to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the GRC.
