Trenton High School girls tennis has advanced singles players Mallory Sole and Alaina Overton, in addition to the doubles team of Astrid Soriano and Lydia Leininger into Class 1 Section 8 competition after Friday’s District 15 competition at Excelsior Springs High School.
Mallory Sole won the District 15 singles title, sweeping through three matches, including the championship match against her teammate, Alaina Overton, with the score in the final going 6-1, 6-1. With top-two finishers from District 15 and District 16 both advancing, Sole and Overton both advanced.
Sole started her day with a first-round bye, then beat Audrey Snider of Chillicothe in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-1. Sole rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the semifinals against Lena Oberwaleney of Cameron, advancing to the final against Overton.
Overton had a bye in the first round, before a 6-2, 6-3 quarterfinal triumph against Olivia Anderson of Chillicothe. In a tough semifinal match, Overton beat Anna Selby of Excelsior Springs by a final of 6-2, 1-6, with a tiebreak score of 10-5.
Trenton had two doubles entries, with the team of Harley Hall and Jillian Voorhies cruising in the opening round to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Burton and Dotson of Cameron, moving into a quarterfinal showdown with Cami Carpenter and Leah Lourenco of Chillicothe, with the Lady Hornet duo winning 6-0, 6-1. Carpenter and Laurenco won the semifinals over Excelsior Springs to advance to the final.
Trenton’s Soriano and Leininger had a free pass through the benefit of a first-round bye, then beat Mueller and Riegel of Excelsior Springs in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinals, Soriano and Leininger grabbed a dramatic win over Washburn and Garr of Chillicothe, falling in the opening set 6-4, before rallying in the second set 6-2, and taking the tiebreaker 10-6.
Trenton has a #1 seed and Chillicothe a #2 seed for team district competition this week, with semifinal matches coming on Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, with the Lady Bulldogs hosting Carrollton and the Lady Hornets hosting Excelsior Springs at 4 o’clock. The semifinal winners meet on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock in the Class 1, District 15 championship match.
