Kelvin Herrera, a member of the famed Kansas City Royals bullpen that served as the backbone to back-to-back World Series appearances and the 2015 World Championship, has decided to retire.
Herrera was signed as a 19-year old by Kansas City and within two years, had made his big league debut in 2011. In 2014, he posted a 1.41 ERA in 70 games for the American League champions, followed by a 2.71 ERA in 72 games in the 2015 title campaign. Combining with Wade Davis and Greg Holland, the trio formed the “HDH” combination that proved to be one of the best relieving trios in the history of the game.
In 22 career postseason appearances, Herrera threw down a 1.26 ERA and 38 strikeouts. In the 2015 World Series, he had three scoreless appearances against the Mets.
In 2018, after Kansas City’s run of excellence had long since faded, he was traded to Washington, before signing with the Chicago White Sox, where he struggled to a 6.54 ERA over two seasons on the “South Side”. He only lasted with the rival Cubs from August 3rd to August 26th of 2020 before his release by the “North Siders”.
In 10 MLB seasons, Herrera will finish with 510 strikeouts in 513 2/3 innings, a 3.21 ERA, and a 1.20 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched).
