Needing a new quarterback on the roster to replace the retired Chad Henne as a potential backup to Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a deal with 33-year old veteran and former University of Missouri signal caller Blaine Gabbert.
Gabbert has started 48 games in an 11 year NFL career, although none with the sort of offensive weaponry afforded him in Kansas City. Gabbert entered the NFL as a first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the early 2010s, and has since played with San Francisco, Arizona, Tennessee, and most recently, Tampa Bay. He owns a career record of just 13-35 with 51 touchdown connections to 47 interceptions.
Henne, the retired product of the University of Michigan, did not play often as Mahomes backup, but when counted upon, he proved valuable, playing twice in playoff competition for Kansas City, including last season’s divisional round triumph over the Jaguars.
In addition to Mahomes and Gabbert, the Chiefs also have a third quarterback on the roster in Shane Buechele.
