Phil Pressey, a former player for the Boston Celtics, is returning to the team as a member of Joe Mazzulla’s coaching staff. Pressey, who spent one season as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Missouri, will join the Celtics as an assistant coach.
Pressey, 32, began his NBA playing career with the Celtics as an undrafted free agent from 2013 to 2015. After a professional career that included stints in the NBA, G-League, and Europe, Pressey transitioned to coaching and joined the coaching staff at Missouri for the 2022-23 season under head coach Dennis Gates.
This offseason, the Celtics have made several changes to their coaching staff, and Pressey is the third new assistant coach to be added, alongside Sam Cassell and Charles Lee.
During his college career, Pressey achieved success as a point guard, earning All-Big 12 and All-Southeastern Conference honors. He had a successful tenure at Missouri from 2010 to 2013, with a record of 76-27. Pressey led the Big 12 in assists and steals during the 2011-12 season and topped the SEC in assists during the 2012-13 season. He holds the record for the most steals in Missouri’s history, tied with Anthony Peeler at 196, and also holds the program record for assists with 580.
Phil Pressey comes from a basketball family, as his father, Paul Pressey, had a long coaching career in the NBA after playing professionally for 11 years. Paul Pressey served as an assistant coach for various teams, including the Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Orlando Magic, and San Antonio Spurs.
