On Monday evening, two former Kansas City Chiefs running backs made headlines in the NFL news cycle.
The first one, Ronald Jones II, who was with the Chiefs last season, received a suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances. As a member of the Dallas Cowboys, Jones will miss the first two games of the 2023 regular season. He joined the Cowboys on a one-year contract after winning his second Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs, but his playing time was limited in Kansas City, with only 92 scrimmage yards and one touchdown in seven games.
The second former Chiefs running back, Derrick Gore, signed with the Washington Commanders, reuniting with his former offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy. Gore had a standout performance as an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs in 2021, making the team’s practice squad and eventually playing in 11 games. In Washington, he is expected to continue contributing to the offense and special teams, following Bieniemy’s preference for former Chiefs players.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs are seeing a rookie undrafted free agent running back, Deneric Prince, making a strong impression in training camp. Arrowhead Pride’s film analyst, Caleb James, praised Prince’s performances and contributions to the offense during camp. Prince was already considered the most likely candidate to be the team’s primary kickoff returner during the offseason program, and now his skills on offense have drawn significant attention. James even suggests that Prince could be a lock to make the team’s roster and may see a considerable percentage of offensive snaps during the upcoming season.
