(TSX / STATS) GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators suspended seven players, including standout wide receiver Antonio Callaway, for their Sept. 2 season-opener against Michigan.
“We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing,” coach Jim McElwain said in a statement released Sunday by the school. “Action has been taken — they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward.”
Callaway, rated the 44th-best draft prospect by NFLDraftScout.com, caught 54 passes for 721 yards and three touchdowns last season. He was cited for marijuana possession in May, although McElwain said at SEC Media Days last month that he hadn’t suspended Callaway at that time.
The other players suspended for the opener are linebacker James Houston, offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort, defensive lineman Keivonnis Davis, defensive lineman Jordan Smith, defensive lineman Richerd Desir-Jones and linebacker Ventrell Miller.
Davis started five games last season. Telfort, a true freshman, has been considered a potential contributor.
Florida is preparing to face Michigan in Arlington, Texas, which will be the first regular-season matchup between the teams.
