The only man to bring a Super Bowl championship to Philadelphia was fired by the NFL’s Eagles on Monday, with team owner Jeffrey Lurie indicating that his “allegiance is to what is the best for the Eagles for the first three, four, five years, and not based on if someone deserves to hold their job”.
The Eagles, in 2020, saw the offense slide to 26th in scoring and 28th in passing yards, finishing last in the NFC East with a record of 4-11-1. ESPN, citing sources, indicate that Lurie left a series of recent meetings with Pederson “not convinced” that the coach the issues hitting the team, including how to handle a developing quarterback quandary between struggling veteran Carson Wentz and rookie Jalen Hurts.
Wentz’ level of play regressed this season, with fans and media in Philly attempting to decipher how much of that regression was on Wentz, the former #2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and how much blame should go to subpar offensive line play and a number of injuries suffered by the team’s receiving corps.
The firing of Pederson leaves Philadelphia with the seventh job opening in the National Football League this offseason.
