The National Football League, as the sun rose across the country on Wednesday morning, released a portion of the upcoming 2023 regular season, with the dates and matchups announced for International Series games.
Contrary to the numerous reports, including several out of Chicago, that indicated the Bears would be the opponent for the Kansas City Chiefs in Frankfurt, Germany, instead the Miami Dolphins and former Chief Tyreek Hill will be taking down the Super Bowl champions. It appears there was accuracy to the original reports involving the Bears, as NBC’s Peter King, on Monday, reported that the Chiefs had requested to take on the Bears at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, instead of overseas. The Dolphins vs. Chiefs matchup will be played at Eintracht Frankfurt Stadium.
There will be four other regular season NFL games in Europe this fall, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have made a point in developing a fanbase in London, playing in the British capital on back-to-back weeks, taking on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4 and the Buffalo Bills in Week 5. The Week 4 game will be at Wembley Stadium, with the Bills game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Baltimore Ravens will take on the Tennessee Titans at the Tottenham facility in Week 6, with the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots playing at Frankfurt Stadium in Week 10. There are no international games in Mexico this season due to renovations underway at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The Chiefs will open the NFL season, participating in the NFL’s recent tradition of the reigning Super Bowl champion opening the season at home, with the game at Arrowhead against a yet-to-be-announced opponent slated for Thursday, September 8th.
“CBS Mornings”, on Wednesday, announced an AFC Championship Game rematch between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs on New Year’s Eve (Sunday, 12/31) afternoon at 3:25 in Kansas City. The game will be shown nationally on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. Kansas City beat Cincinnati in the 2022 AFC Championship Game 23-20, part of the Chiefs march to the franchise’s third Super Bowl championship, and second in four years.
For the first time in NFL history, there will be a game on “Black Friday”, with the New York Jets hosting the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins on Friday, November 24th. On Christmas Day, the Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants. NBC Sports is reporting that three games are planned on Christmas Day, with staggered kick times of 12 noon, 3:30 PM, and 7:20 PM.
The entire 2023 NFL regular season schedule will be announced on Thursday night at 7 o’clock on the NFL Network and ESPN2.
