Trenton High School’s softball team picked up a four-hit, four RBI day from Teya Cooksey, and began the afternoon with a record-setting home run by Maci Moore, part of a 10-3 triumph at Lawson that moved the Lady Bulldog softball record to 8-4.
Moore opened the scoring for Trenton with a leadoff homer over the left field fence in the top of the first, career homer #20 for the junior, breaking the all-time THS home run record she shared for less than a week with 2019 graduate Salem Croy. After Lexi Whitaker had a one-out single, Cooksey drove in her teammate with a two-run shot, giving THS a 3-0 advantage.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the visitors second, with a single by Whitaker scoring Moore. After starting pitcher McKayla Blackburn had shutout Lawson with three innings of no-hit softball, Lawson struck in the fourth inning, as Kinley Wilkins hit a two-run homer to the opposite field, having followed a double by Jocilyn Williams.
Up 4-2 heading into the 5th, Trenton put the game out of reach out a two-run triple by Cooksey in the 5th inning, while the Lady Bulldogs added four runs in the 7th, with Whitaker providing the big blow with a ringing two-run shot to left-center field. A single by Alli Hatch scored Delaney McPheeters for Lawson’s final run in the 7th.
Blackburn picked up the win for Trenton, with seven innings of work, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) with ten strikeouts and no walks. Lakyn Jones started and took the loss for the Lady Cardinals, now 2-9 on the season.
