Chillicothe rally stuns Staley, gives Lady Hornets tournament title at Savannah

The Chillicothe Lady Hornets outscored the Staley Lady Falcons 12-4 in the fourth quarter, rallying for a 42-40 win in Saturday’s championship game of the Savannah Invitational Tournament.

Staley led at the half 24-17 and CHS managed to cut just one point off the Falcon advantage in the third quarter, setting up the fourth quarter dramatics.  Whitney Clampitt had a superb game for Chillicothe, scoring 22 points as the Hornets improve to 4-0.  Chillicothe trailed by six points with 99 seconds remaining in the contest, but Clampitt hit two three point shots, part of a key surge to edge Chillicothe closer to the Kansas City team.

Clampitt hit a free throw with 10.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, with Karson Keithley doubling the lead with a made free throw 7 seconds later.

The loss drops Staley to 2-2 on the contest.

The Chillicothe girls host the unbeaten Trenton Lady Bulldogs on Friday night at 6 o’clock, with coverage on Hot Country Z 101.7.

The Chillicothe boys, behind 22 points from Cade Snyder and 14 from Zach Trout, beat the Platte County Pirates in a third place game thriller, 60-55.  Walker Graves contributed 12 points to the winning cause, while Tanner Newberry paced the Pirates with 15 points.

Staley won the boy’s championship of the Savannah Tournament, beating the Maryville Spoofhounds, 51-48.

At the Platte Valley Invitational on Friday night, Bearcat Arena in Maryville hosted the championship and third place games.  South Nodaway won the girls title, 50-35 over DeKalb, while the Stewartsville Lady Cardinals took third place, 57-25 over Northeast Nodaway.

The boys title went to St. Joseph Christian, as the Lions took down South Nodaway 49-36.  Stewartsville won boys third place, 53-42 over West Nodaway.

From Northwestern High School in Mendon on Saturday night, the Meadville boys won another tournament title, outscoring Northwestern 80-63 in the championship game.  Linn County’s boys had a strong performance, matching Meadville by scoring 80 points in a 80-50 beat-down of Higbee in the third place game.

The Northwestern girls championship went to Higbee, with a 65-61 win on Saturday night against the Hale Lady Cardinals.

At the Albany Tournament on Saturday night, the Jefferson girls and Stanberry boys took the championship night victories.  The Lady Eagles beat Stanberry in the girls final, 48-36, while the Stanberry boys, in a similarly played game to the girls final, beat Worth County 44-36.  Jefferson’s boys took the third place hardware at Albany, beating King City 63-51.

Scotland County swept the championship trophies at the Novinger Invitational Tournament.  In the girls final, Calesse Bair scored 30 points, as the Lady Tigers beat the Green City Lady Gophers, 71-43.  Green City will play at #3 ranked (Class 1) Mercer this Tuesday night at 6 o’clock, while Scotland County will play at Milan on Tuesday night at 6 o’clock (Hot Country Z 101.7 with coverage).

The Scotland County boys downed LaPlata in Saturday night’s finale, 68-52.  The long-time rivalry between the Green City Gophers and Novinger Wildcats added another chapter, as Novinger won the boys third place game on its home floor, 63-46 on Saturday afternoon.
