The Chillicothe Lady Hornets fought off Lawson’s attempts to slow down the pace in Saturday’s Cameron Tournament championship game, winning a low-scoring contest against the Lady Cards, 33-16. Lawson, noting the difficulty in matching up with Chillicothe’s speed and athleticism, used long-possessions and patient play to ‘shorten the game’, but found the basket infrequently, making the upset potential nil.
Whitney Clampitt paced CHS with 12 points, as the 3rd-ranked Lady Hornets remain with just one loss on the season.
The Lawson boys salvaged a split for the KCI school in the Cameron finals, as a three-point shot at the 4th-quarter buzzer gave the Cardinals an upset win over Maryville, 41-38.
The third place games, played at Cameron High School, saw the Higginsville girls defeat Savannah 55-46, while the Chillicothe boys, behind 17 points from Westley Bransgaard, downed Higginville, 51-39. Jack Willard and Cade Snyder both scored 11 points for the Hornets.
On Friday night, the Maryville girls won the consolation final against Cameron, 50-43, while the LeBlond boys downed Smithville in a 5th place contest, 52-43.
The 7th place games went the LeBlond girls (46-37 over Excelsior Springs) and the Cameron boys (53-51 over Excelsior Springs).
