The Chillicothe Hornets, due to Hamilton’s success in winning the Class 1 football title, had to wait an extra week in open the 2016-2017 boy’s basketball season. Instead of playing Penney on November 22nd, the CHS boys traveled to Savannah, for a matchup with MEC rival Bishop LeBlond in pool play at the annual Savannah Tournament.
The wait was worth it for Tim Cool’s team, as the Hornets rode 22 points from guard Cade Snyder and 12 points from Jack Willard to a hard-fought 49-42 win over the Eagles, giving Chillicothe a chance, with a Thursday night victory, to move into the Savannah championship game on Saturday afternoon.
Peyton Maguire led the Golden Eagles with 14 points in defeat.
The Platte County Pirates, playing in pool play action against Savannah on Tuesday night, beat the Savages 52-34. The Maryville girls, led by former Trenton High School coach Quentin Albrecht, picked up a 59-51 win against the St. Joseph Central JV, while the Savannah Lady Savages cruised to a 51-12 victory against Bishop LeBlond.
Tonight (Wednesday) is an off-night at Savannah, with both Chillicothe teams in action on Thursday. At 4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon, Maryville will battle Platte County, with the winner representing “Pool 1” in Saturday’s title game (4:00 PM). At 5:30 on Thursday night, the Maryville Lady Spoofhounds play Staley. The Chillicothe boys play the Staley Falcons at 7 o’clock on Thursday night, with the winner representing “Pool 2” in the title game on Saturday, while the Chillicothe Lady Hornets play Savannah at Thursday night at 8:30, with the winner moving to the girls championship game, Saturday afternoon at 2:30.
